ȘTEFAN PETRESCU, The Metropolitan Question: Ioan Caragiani’s Mission to Constantinople
This paper examines Romania’s efforts to establish a separate ecclesiastical authority for the Aromanians in the Ottoman Empire within the broader context of the Eastern Question. Under the leadership Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dimitrie A. Sturdza, both official and informal diplomatic initiatives in Constantinople – coordinated by Trandafir Djuvara, Apostol Mărgărit, Nicolae Mișu, and Ioan Caragiani – sought Ottoman sanction for the appointment of Metropolitan Antim, despite Greek opposition. Drawing on diplomatic reports and private correspondence, the study highlights the political and religious complexities of the Aromanian question between 1895 and 1898.
